- High Court Decision
The Northern Territory Government has reached an agreement with the Traditional Owners for access to inter-tidal waters overlying Aboriginal land within the Tidal Aboriginal land of the Daly River Port Keats Land Trust from Dooley Point south to a point south of the Old Mission including the Tidal Aboriginal land of Docherty Island for a 20 year period. Recreational fishers and other recreational users now have permission to access these waters without individual permits or permit fees.
The decision also provides an agreement (permission) for commercial fishers (including fishing tour operators) and all other commercial users to access waters overlying Aboriginal land.
The Government’s proposal includes a commitment of funds to support the local marine ranger program and for ongoing training and education. As well as enhancement of an Aboriginal Coastal Fishing Licence and support to develop a local code of conduct for visitors to the area.
