- Responsible fishing
- High Court Decision
The Territory Government has reached an agreement with Traditional Owners for access to inter-tidal waters in the Minimini / Murgenella region between Garig Gunak Barlu (Cobourg) National Park and Kakadu National Park. This will provide permission for recreational fishers, fishing tour operators and commercial fishers to access these waters without individual fishing permits or permit fees.
The agreement includes funding for marine ranger patrols, enhancing marine ranger powers, developing a fishing code of conduct and establishing an Aboriginal Regional Fisheries Committee.
The agreement has an initial three-year trial period, with the intention of extending it out to 20 years.
This will give Traditional Owners a real say in the management of their sea country, while also allowing access for recreational and commercial fisher (including fishing tour operators) to the inter-tidal waters in the region.
