- High Court Decision
The Territory Government has reached an agreement with the Traditional Owners for access to the inter-tidal waters overlying the Aboriginal land within the Nhulunbuy region for a 20 year period. Recreational fishers and other recreational users now have permission to access these waters without individual permits or permit fees.
The decision also provides an agreement (permission) for Fishing Tour Operators and commercial fishers to access waters overlying Aboriginal land.
The Government’s proposal includes funding to support the local Marine Ranger program (with training), an Aboriginal Coastal Fishing Licence and support to enhance the local Code of Conduct and the regional Management Consultative Committee.
