- High Court Decision
The Government has reached an agreement with Traditional Owners for access to the inter-tidal waters overlying Aboriginal land around the Tiwi and Vernon Islands region for a 20 year period.
The agreement grants recreational and commercial fishers, as well as fishing tour operators’ permit free access to inter-tidal waters around the Southern and Eastern regions of Melville and Bathurst Islands, as well as the Vernon Islands and Aspley Strait.
Visitors will also be permitted to visit the townships of Wurrumiyanga and Pirlangimpi where they may be able to buy fuel, supplies and visit the art gallery.
The Government’s proposal includes a commitment in funds for Marine Ranger patrols (with training), a Code of Conduct, and funding as cash payments to recognise the level of recreational and commercial fishing (including Fishing Tour Operators) in the region.
