- High Court Decision
The voluntary Code of Conduct is designed to ensure that recreational and commercial fishers understand what behaviour is expected of them.
It is similar to the existing Amateur Fishermans Association Northern Territory (AFANT) Code of Conduct, which deals with things like suggested methods of handling fish to enhance survival after release. It also deals with matters like being courteous to other users of the waters, including members of the Aboriginal community, and not dumping dead fish or bycatch in the vicinity of a local Aboriginal community.
It has been drafted by the Territory Government, based on discussions with AFANT, the Land Councils, the Northern Territory Seafood Council, Northern Territory Guided Fishing Industry Association (NTGFIA), and Traditional Owners. The draft has been provided to those stakeholders for comment.
